    Pros +

    • Staff was helpful and welcoming. Omurice in the café was delicious and other food and drinks looked yummy as well. Everything was clean and free parking!
    • food was good . the only hotel in Japan than i know that went big and did a good job for halloween decorations. the best english staff ive ever met in Japan's hotel haha みんな英語上手だね hahaaha.
    • I enjoyed the environment at the hostel. The staff were very friendly and willing to engage guests in conversation. It was clean and had a nice design throughout the hostel. They offered delicious food for a fair price as well. It was also very nice of them to offer shuttle service to the nearest train station if guests needed it.

    Cons -

    • Common area could use a place to lounge and be comfy. And curtains don't cover you from light in the bunk room very well.
    • nothing just the location is far but other than that all is good
    • The AC is helpful if hot but a curtain at the head of the bed for the beds near the AC would be nice to have so the cold air doesn't blow directly on you.

This hostel is beautiful and modern with friendly staff who speak great English and Japanese. The beds were very comfortable with great linens and towels. Very beautiful and welcoming common areas too. Great keypad security system and small lockers available for your valuables as well.

Probably because it's a newer constructed building, the walls were pretty thin and it was easy to hear conversations between rooms and shared spaces. I recommend bringing earplugs!

Friendly staff and comfortable room and bed.

The staff was really kind and understanding. I made the mistake of booking for the wrong night, so when I arrived they understood and simply swapped days so that I would not have to pay an additional night. I stayed 2 nights anyway because I liked the place. The staff spoke English and were just great people to be around. The place had all facilities one might need for a hostel, everything was clean, and the atmosphere was convivial. The slightly recluse location is offset by the fact that they offer to transport you to the nearest station if you require.

The location is a slight inconvenience as there aren’t many great things to do around, but as explained, the staff offers to transport you to the train station if you need it, so that’s not much of an inconvenience.

The staff was amazing, so kind and helpful! And the place was really clean and had great amenities. We really loved our stay here and would definitely stay again.

It is pretty far from the closest station but the free parking definitely makes up for it.

We had nice stay at Matoi.Staff were very frendly. well-equipped with modern amenities and kitchen. Value for the price.

Matoi was my first stop after leaving the whirlwind that is Tokyo. It turned out to be a great getaway, with modern facilities located in a calm suburban part of Gunma. The hostel is a great base for exploring nearby Onsen towns, with both Ikaho and Kusatsu being suitable as day trips.Best of all is the staff, who are exceedingly warm and friendly, offering loads of recommendations and other conversation. I ended up spending most my time in the restaurant downstairs, chatting and trying out the various food and drinks on offer.

The hostel is some ways off from the nearest station, which can be a bit rough if you're carrying a lot. Luckily the staff can give you a ride if you let them know in advance.

The staff is really nice, the owner speaks English which was helpful to speak with her. They can serve food at their restaurant, or you can cook in the kitchen. A supermarket is really close. I really recommend it !

The doors have an alarm code that can be a little noisy at night for light sleepers

    10AyakaPosted on: 8-15-2024

Bed has curtain around so you can keep privacy, and bedside right is useful for reading/checking next schedule. Bath/toilet are both clean, bathmats and slippers are provided. Staffs are considerable and friendly, pick up/ drop off to the nearby station is one of the best offer as this hostel is a bit far from the station.

There is few mirror at this property, so if you do the makeup before go, it can be a borther for you.

It was one of the best hostels I stayed in!The crew is super kind, and we had a good talk! Loved the ability to ask for a shuttle to the place and to the train station, even though the train station itself has annoying hours. For every night you stay, you get a drink card since it's also a bar, but they can make coffee too!The room was great, had everything needed, place to eat, work if needed, a great bathroom, and showers.Enjoyed my stay the whole time!本当に楽しかった!

    10Kouji.TPosted on: 1-25-2024

The staff was wonderful. The owner and boss Yoshida-san were both great! The staff, whether the cook or the bartenders also made the stay worth. Definitely worth checking out if you're ever in Gunma, as it's the best hostel in Gunma by far!

    10RoninPosted on: 1-7-2024

Clean rooms/bathrooms and lovely staff who were quite helpful.

It is located in a strange area, not close to many things. But is good if you have a car/bicycle

The staff are so sweet and friendly. It has a karaoke room, and it has a private and shared bathroom. There's also a kitchen area if you want to make your own food. Also, there's no curfew. Free shuttle service, just let them know when you want to use it, and they will drive you around.

    7MiguelPosted on: 11-1-2023

Pier speaks different languages and more of the staff understand or speak good English which makes things quite simple

The location it’s a not convenient there’s a huge super market nearby but everything else incredible far including the Gunma - Soja station which it’s 20 min walk they provide a shuttle to station but if you want to move one your own it’s just hassle

    9立Posted on: 10-10-2023

The hostel looks new, and it's big, which allows everything has more space to stretch out- kitchen and common area. Kitchen is equipped with almost everything (seems to not have coffee cups I noticed), so you are more than welcome to buy fresh stuff from the supermarket (5 mins walk) and cook there.

    10ChelseaPosted on: 10-8-2023

The owner and the staff are super friendly and kind! And though the hostel is not close to a train station, they have a free shuttle to/from the closest station. Food and drinks were also good!

    9BarbaraPosted on: 10-2-2023

Great staff, very clean and comfortable, well equipped and thought out kitchen/pantry

Bit far from train station/bus stop - BUT can book hostel shuttle service in advance

The staffs are super friendly !!! The food is good as well. I was super nervous because I’m having entrance exam for the second day but spending one night in matoi help me relax a lot
